About the Arab Association for the Fights Against AIDS

The Arab Association for the Fight Against AIDS was established in 1998, in order to educate about the risk of HIV infection and to raise awareness for the treatment of AIDS within the Palestinian community in Israel. In the conservative Palestinian society, possibilities to transfer information and educational material about the causes of the disease are very restricted, resulting in misconceptions and lack of knowledge about the disease, delayed diagnosis and lack of treatment, and social isolation and economic strain for the infected and their families. The Arab Association for the Fight Against AIDS is the only organization in Israel - including the Ministry of Health and the Israeli AIDS Task Force - that works for the prevention of HIV and AIDS in the Arab sector, and the only provider of Arabic educational material.

Goals

  • To raise the consciousness of and educate the Palestinian Israeli community about HIV and AIDS;
  • To reduce the transmission rate of HIV among Palestinian Israelis;
  • To encourage Israeli institutions to create culturally and linguistically appropriate educational material for the prevention of the disease;
  • To conduct outreach and provide social services, advocacy and assistance to Palestinian Israelis living with HIV and AIDS and to their families.
The target groups of the Arab Association for the Fights Against AIDS are:
  • Palestinian-Israeli students in secondary schools and universities;
  • Palestinian-Israeli community health professionals;
  • HIV infected patients and their families;
  • Drug users, bisexuals and homosexuals in the Palestinian community.

Activities

  • Public awareness campaigns;
  • Workshops on AIDS prevention for health professionals and social workers;
